This is the 7th vintage that the Winemaker at Abiouness picked grapes from the old vines on the Stanly Ranch property in Carneros. As usual, the proximity to the bay, offering cool foggy mornings and gentle breezes, balances the intense sunny afternoons thereby aiding in optimal ripening for this delicate varietal.
The grapes were harvested by hand, transported to the winery, hand sorted into a destemmer, and then gently dumped into our very own open-topped stainless steel tank.
On the palate, all this fruit is complemented by a bright, mouthwatering acidity and soft, sweet tannins.
The history of the winemaker, Nicole Abiouness, goes back for some time, but Abiouness wines begins in the year 2000. She was working as cellar master at Luna Vineyards when she heard about ten rows of old vine Pinot Noir from Carneros that were up for sale.
The name she chose is her last name (compliments of a Lebanese father). Since it is not one of those easily pronounced names, like Smith, the label has a beautiful lotus flower to catch the eye. A variety of waterlily, the lotus rises in the morning from the muddy waters to open its perfectly symmetrical petals symbolizing the creation of life; purity, resurrection and perfect beauty; the union of bliss and emptiness, night and day, male and female. The closed lotus bud signifies potential.
Her mission is to work closely with the growers in order to optimize the potential the grapes already possess and allow them to express their true nature. That leads to minimal intervention in the winery: hand-sorting, minimal to no pumping, hand punchdowns, uninoculated, juice that is then left unfined and unfiltered until bottling.
The Napa Valley is one of the most highly praised regions in the wine world, and has been ever since the mid-70's (if not the mid-60's for Robert Mondavi and like-minded pioneers) for the quality of its climate, and its seemingly inexhaustible supply of moderate, ideal growing seasons. A region full of climatologically diverse sub-regions, it is a winemaker's paradise, as they are able to harness the potential of so many diverse terroirs within such a relatively small area.
