Italy > Piedmont > Barbera d'Alba

In keeping with regional tradition, the Oberto brothers produce only classic Piedmontese red wines. Their Barbera d'Alba La Rosina comes from the best selection of grapes gathered from vineyards which have an excellent exposure, resulting in a concentrated and generous wine.

The Erbaluna farm is located on the grounds of the winery owned by brothers Andrea and Severino Oberto who continue their family tradition which dates back into the last century. A total balance between classic wine-making methods and more modern techniques, the winery looks like old bottles lined up in quiet, out-of-the-way places, exposed-brick vaulted ceilings in the cellars, and massive wooden casks for slow ageing of the Barolo wine live side-by-side with stainless steel vats and up-to-date machinery. The decision to follow organic methods was made in 1985 and it was the result of a natural desire to rediscover the direct contact with the land which in the previous years was becoming lost.

Piedmont is the most "Frenchified" of all Italian wine regions. The long valleys of the Alpine foothills lead to easier travel to France's southern coast and inland than to the rest of Italy. It is perhaps for this reason that the Piedmontese have long practiced the most refined wine traditions of any Italian region. Terroir-based wisdom trickled down from early French masters (monks, typically) to this area.
Known mostly for their reds (but producing some excellent whites,) from the early ripening Dolcetto grape to the lofty, deep reds of Barolo and Barbaresco crafted from the Nebbiolo grape, these wines are clearly crafted using centuries of terroir-based winemaking.
