Meet the CoolVines Wine Geek! He’ll guide you toward – or away from! – wines that have a unique flavor profile: intentionally oxidized wines, earthy, stinky wines, wines with a bit of fritz on the tongue. Look for him throughout our web site, and on the shelves in our stores, to point the way toward these geeky wines.
Anne-Marie and Jean-Marc Vincent inherited most of their vines, principally located in and around the village of Santenay in the southern Côte de Beaune, from Jean-Marc‘s grandfather. They produce 2 premier cru white wines from Santenay, and are constantly experimenting and evolving, never afraid to try a technique in the vineyards or cellar if it is natural and respects their vines and wines. Most recently Jean-Marc is experimenting with plantings of indigenous wildflowers between his rows of vines for pest and crop management and has switched barrel-makers in favor of one that uses a long drawn out toasting process, maximizing the positive interaction between wood and wine while eliminating overtly oaky flavors. All of the Vincent wines are a testament for how much more important a talented and dedicated vigneron is than an appellation. While a great vigneron can make over-achievers from any appellation, a great appellation will never be great in the hands of mediocrity.
The great wines of Burgundy are uniquely complex, compelling and at times memorizing. Above all they are evocative, transformative but like all creatures, temperamental and anything but dependable. Two grapes dominate this agricultural masterpiece, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Both grapes achieve their greatest elegance when planted in cooler climates, to which Burgundy is the coolest and most Northern climate of all the major regions famous for red wines. When winemakers talk about Burgundy, they generally speak of terroir, the compilation of the vineyard's soil, slope, orientation, nuance of climate, etc. This concept of terroir is what makes wines produced from grapes even in the same village or vineyard strikingly different. Burgundy is a place of legend, awe and adventure, a place that wine lovers call home.
