Bursting with dark fruits, Petrale is a serious coastal Aglianico. This wine achieves its depth from malolactic fermentation in small barriques for 8-9 months. Wine possessing definite character, but with enough suppleness to pair well with many dishes.

Terra di Vento is a 60 hectare / 150 acre farm in the foothills of the Picentini mountains southeast of Salerno. Within sight of the Bay of Naples, the 4 hectares / 10 acres of vines benefit from a sunny exposition, sea breezes and a high enough elevation to escape the worst effects of the coast's high humidity. The grapes do ripen beautifully; the wines show all the sensuous qualities of coastal Aglianico and Fiano, and more. Roberto Nicodemo and his team, including the young star enologo, Fortunato Sebastiano, have taken the winery firmly into the organic/biologico camp. Preserving this remarkably unspoiled terrain is a high priority for Nicodemo and his wife, Marialuisa Zottola, whose family has owned the farm for generations. This is why Terra di Vento will never become simply a wine estate. The vines share the land and nutrients with a many other crops and livestock, and there are no plans to upset the balance.

Inland from Naples, the heartland of Campania, lies southern Italy's most important wine regions. The foothills of the Appno Napoletano range encompass the prime growing areas for the late-ripening Aglianico, the minerally Greco di tufo, and the elegant Fiano. Historically, Campania has witnessed millenia of conquering hordes crossing her soils, many leaving contributions on a grand scale. Certainly the Greek occupiers planted here, leaving a viticultural legacy that stretches to the present day.

I received this wine as a gift. It was good overall, but not very strong in any category. As best as I can describe it, it was subtle, with a little bit of a velvety texture like chocolate.

Black cherry, a little earthiness, but pleasant and balanced. Solid acidity helped this wine pair well with roasted chicken. A hit with the wife and the in-laws! The finish was a little short, but the fruit came through even to the end, and the nose an... More
