Melville was founded on a simple concept: to produce handcrafted, honest wines that clearly express the vintage, the varietal, and the unique terroir of Sta. Rita Hills. Bright and focused, the Verna's Chardonnay is a great everyday white wine.
Melville is owned by father and son Ron and Chad Melville, with Greg Brewer as their winemaker. After having owned vineyards in Napa, Ron Melville came to Santa Rita and never looked back. The Santa Rita Hills appellation's microclimate, which is characterized by cool temperatures, prominent coastal winds and foggy mornings, is known to be viticulturally suited to growing Burgundian grape varietals such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Northern Rhone Syrah. Calculated composting, complex cover cropping practice and deficit irrigation, matched with a tremendous amount of crop reduction and canopy management, are the critical components to Melville's strength as wine growers.
The Santa Rita Hills AVA lies inland along the Santa Ynez River, roughly 10 miles from the Pacific Coast. The river bends south suddenly, marking the end of heavy ocean influence, and the beginning of the region itself. Here the cool climate and variety of silt and clay soils lend themselves to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fruit of high quality, although many winegrowers are experimenting to great results with other cool-weather varieties.
