The Piandibugnano Nanerone is made of the rare and wonderful Aleatico grape. A rich, luscious end to any fall or winter dinner.
Piandibugnano is the work of three amici and co-investors. Giorgio Bucelli, a veteran wine salesman and now marketer; Paolo Trappolini, the enologo for Avignonesi as well as this venture; and Carlo Filippeschi, a restaurateur who manages the business end – together they have banded together to create a promising new name in southern Tuscany. Founded in 2002, this 3.5 hectare (9 acre) winery sits at the uppermost zone of grape and olive cultivation in the chilly Montecucco zone in Tuscany, where the climate and terrain are dominated by the 1800 metre / 4500 foot Mount Amiata. The wines exhibit a dynamic combination of warm- and cool-weather characteristics – big and rich, yet always held in check by a bracing line of acidity and intriguing scents and flavors of the Mediterranean maquis (macchia in Italian).
Tuscany is the quintessential Italian wine region, a place where the Renaissance was born and the Church has reigned. Wine has found a place as one of the most humble of comforts with the people of Tuscany, on the table at every meal or served with a piece of bread as the meal itself. Though all made from the most famous of Tuscan grapes, Sangiovese, Tuscany is the birthplace of some of the most recognizable Italian wines: Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino. Italy's also a land of district microclimates, so while traditional red's feature the sangiovese grape, they can showcase different lands of structure and flavor characteristics.
