Meet the CoolVines Wine Geek! He’ll guide you toward – or away from! – wines that have a unique flavor profile: intentionally oxidized wines, earthy, stinky wines, wines with a bit of fritz on the tongue. Look for him throughout our web site, and on the shelves in our stores, to point the way toward these geeky wines.
Grecanico (40%) gives freshness, spice, and sea-salt; the Catarratto (60%) fills things out and adds a nutty note. As the wine's name notes, and Island of Perfumes. Gianfranco Palladino and family are making honest, pure wines from local grapes in the Marsala region of Sicily. Sustainable farming and hand-harvesting in a region and price-point that isn’t always the norm. Our idea of fresh, Sicilian wines ready to drink; both are fermented and aged in stainless steel.
Sicily's wine history dates back to ancient Greece, when the tiny island was a Hellenic colony. Though most famous for its sweet Marsala produced on the western side of the isle, Sicily also features a broad pallette of exciting dry wines made from native varietals that hail from its eastern coastal region. Carricante, for example, is a white wine grape that's indigineous to the black ashen soils of Italy's largest active volcano, Mt. Etna. Nero d'Avola is Sicily's most famous red wine grape, though Nerello Mascalese grown further north of Avola in the Catania region may give it a run for its money in the near future. No matter what kind of wine you enjoy, Sicily's got something that will kick-start your palate.
