The Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is arguably one of France's finest estates, if not one of the oldest estates in the Northern Rhone. The philosophy of the domaine is best summed up by the simple expression that graces their label "Vignerons de Père en Fils depuis 1481," vine growers from father to son since 1481. The families estate is all about continuity between the generations, and the present day Jean-Louis Chave understands the the legacy of his storied family is found in each bottle. For many reason, Chave's Hermitage is vastly considered to be the best in the region, but he aptly places his families name and reputation on the line for wines sourced outside the family domaine. The 2009 "Silene" Crozes-Hermitage is an example of such a wine, as Jean Louis carefully selects parcels that are 100% organically farmed, and come from hillside vineyards, providing the wine with superior sun exposure to ripen the grapes and drainage. The "Silene" is 100% Syrah, the only red varietal allowed in the Crozes-Hermitage appellation.
Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is a family owned winery. It has been passed from father to son since 1481. The Domaine is currently under the direction of Jean-Louis Chave, though his father, Gérard, is still around the domaine for occasional advice.
When phylloxera hit in the 19th century they were obliged to move down to the Rhône valley to diversify into fruit farming, basing themselves in the village of Mauves where the cellars are today. It was at this time that a particularly smart ancestor decided to cross the Rhône river and lay claim to parcels of land on the hill of Hermitage. Jean Louis has once again created the terraces in Lemps where his 60 to 80 year-old-vines grow. He says ‘It's like restoring an ancient monument’.
They work their way up the vineyards, constantly clearing away the overbrush that grows wild in that area. Once they make it to the top they have to start again at the bottom.
