A scant 516 cases of this wine were crafted by consulting winemaker Philippe Melka of Dominus and Chateau Petrus fame. It's a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot that's aged in new French oak for 16 months to yield a modern and intensely hedonistic California jewel.
The Flanagan family chose a superb site situated 1200 ft high on Bennett Ridge in Sonoma County. Their vineyard benefits from the cooling influences of the Petaluma Gap and the San Pablo Bay as well as the warm Sonoma sunshine, allowing their 13 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah to ripen slowly and fully. The outstanding potential of the site attracted the equally outstanding consulting winemaker Philippe Melka, who trained at Chateaux Haut Brion and Petrus in Bordeaux prior to rising to critical acclaim at Dominus winery.
Nearly three-quarters the size of France, California accounts for almost 90 percent of entire American wine production. The production in California alone is one third larger than that of Australia. If California were a separate country, it would be the world's fourth-largest wine producer.
The state's viticultural history dates back to the 18th century when Spanish missionaries planted the first vineyards to produce wine. Today there are more than 1,200 wineries in the state, ranging from small boutique wineries to large corporations with distribution across the globe.
