This is an excellent example of the beautiful Chardonnays hailing from the Saint-Veran appellation in Burgundy. Minimal intervention by the winemaker ensures that the terroir's contribution of ripe, autumnal fruit flavors and mineral verve is preserved in the wine. Excellent as an aperitif or with rich chicken dishes.
Located on a hillside overlooking the village of Pouilly, with 8 hectares of vineyards, this Domaine has been family owned and operated for the last hundred years. Today the Domaine is run by Doctor Bernard Leger-Plumet and his wife, Agnes. They believe the beauty of their wines lies in the vineyard. Their vines are old, and their soil rich and calcareous. Combine this with their delicate use of oak and no added yeasts during ferment and the result is an extremely elegant and agreeable Burgundy.
The great wines of Burgundy are uniquely complex, compelling and at times memorizing. Above all they are evocative, transformative but like all creatures, temperamental and anything but dependable. Two grapes dominate this agricultural masterpiece, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Both grapes achieve their greatest elegance when planted in cooler climates, to which Burgundy is the coolest and most Northern climate of all the major regions famous for red wines. When winemakers talk about Burgundy, they generally speak of terroir, the compilation of the vineyard's soil, slope, orientation, nuance of climate, etc. This concept of terroir is what makes wines produced from grapes even in the same village or vineyard strikingly different. Burgundy is a place of legend, awe and adventure, a place that wine lovers call home.
