This very rare grape is believed to have originated in Greece and made it's way to the Friuli-Venezia Giulia via Slovenia, the first written documentation was in a 1289 notarial contract on a Friulian vineyard.
These Ribolla Gialla grapes were harvested by hand into crates towards the end of September. There was brief cold maceration of the destemmed grapes for 7/8 hours followed by soft pressing. The wine was left in yeast contact until spring, when it was bottled.
Vigna Traverso became part of the Ornella Molon Traverso family in 1998. This estate, always driven by a philosophy that has quality as its main cardinal point, was immediately met with excellent results and great appreciation from Italian and international critics alike. The restructuring of the vineyards, the introduction of new plants with high density per hectare and the use of extremely modern equipment have permitted Vigna Traverso to enter the market with excellent quality wines.
The Colli Orientali del Friuli is the cooler half of the greater Friuli wine country, some which stretches into neighboring Slovenia. Farther inland, the Colli Orientali was once a rising seabed, and the marl and sandstone deposits here make excellent vineyard sites.
