Meet the CoolVines Wine Geek! He’ll guide you toward – or away from! – wines that have a unique flavor profile: intentionally oxidized wines, earthy, stinky wines, wines with a bit of fritz on the tongue. Look for him throughout our web site, and on the shelves in our stores, to point the way toward these geeky wines.
There isn't a more classic expression of Bandol (Provence) from a ripe vintage than the 2008 Chateau Pradeaux. The wine is 95% Mourvedre, the famed black grape for which Bandol is famous. A rich yet elegant wine that demands to accompany hearty cuisine or extended cellaring. Perfect with cassoulet, beef stew, or grilled lamb.
During the second world war, Arlette Portalis and her mother named Suzanne came to restore the domain which had been destroyed. Helped by the « Baron Leroy », the founder of INAO, they set off on the Bandol and mourvedre adventure. Cyrille is the only descendant and, with the land, Arlette has also transmitted her passion of Bandol to him. Since 1985, he is the only winemaker at Château Pradeaux, the bard of the authentic work of the vineyard, the heir of the passion of mourvedre and its patient maturing in oak casks. In his turn he passes on the virus of the mourvedre to his sons Etienne and Edouard. Edouard already works with him and Etienne finishes his training as an engineer to come to strenghten the team. The family adventure goes on, the Château Pradeaux continues to fascinate the current descendant of the Portalis.
Provence is a region famous for its beautiful landscapes, famous artistic residents, outstanding cuisine and not to be missed wines. The top wine choice for the local cuisine is usually rose, although the fuller bodied reds from Bandol and Aix-en-Provence are getting increased recognition from the recent southern Rhone wine explosion. Almost all the wines from Provence are lively blends of several grapes, each with original personalities in other places such as Bordeaux, the Rhone or even Italy. Much of the AOC borders the Mediterranean Sea, and with the sun baking the rocky soil almost year round, grape vines and olive trees thrive.
