This tiny estate in the Mosel owns three hectacres of the famous Graacher Himmelreich and Dompbropst vineyards along with such German heavywieghts as Schaefer, Kerpen and Prum. Old vines, low yields and steep, well-drained soils contribute to the quality and style of these beautifully made wines. Patrick Philipps, now having run the business for the past five years, has a line of wines that are comprised of very small quantities of individual parcels vinified separately. Each wine is remarkably distinct, ranging from the elegance and balance of the dry Riesling to the stunning noble late harvest wines.

The Mosel River valley snakes its way through southern Germany, on its way south to France and Luxembourg. Famously steep inclines lead to difficult work and simply astounding wines. Slate soil dominates the area, with outcroppings of harder quartz farther north.

Great acid. Nice finish. Only lightly sweet. Tastes just like a JJ Prum Kabinett wine, but less than half the price of one. a steal at $18. I'm picking up a case.
