This is one of Italy's great red wines and the historic flagship of the Gaja family. Produced from 100% Nebbiolo grapes, the wine takes its name from the village of its origin. Gaja Barbaresco has been in production since the winery's founding in 1859.
Angelo Gaja is the tour de force behind the eponymous label, which was founded in 1895 by his grandfather who was also named Angelo. For almost a century Gaja produced wines in Barbaresco in the same traditional manner as other Nebbiolo-based wines were crafted in that region. But in the 1980s, the younger Angelo took it upon himself to make radical changes to production techniques in order to improve the quality and consistency of the wines that bore his family name. He updated his cellar equipment, even purchasing new French barriques for aging his Nebbiolo, and he insisted on an exacting vineyard management regimen to match the uniquely inspiring sub-alpine vineyards he owned. His aim was to create wines that were among the best in the world, and many believe he's achieved that goal. Taste for yourself and you just might agree!
Piedmont is the most "Frenchified" of all Italian wine regions. The long valleys of the Alpine foothills lead to easier travel to France's southern coast and inland than to the rest of Italy. It is perhaps for this reason that the Piedmontese have long practiced the most refined wine traditions of any Italian region. Terroir-based wisdom trickled down from early French masters (monks, typically) to this area.
Known mostly for their reds (but producing some excellent whites,) from the early ripening Dolcetto grape to the lofty, deep reds of Barolo and Barbaresco crafted from the Nebbiolo grape, these wines are clearly crafted using centuries of terroir-based winemaking.
