Vaona is located in the heart of the classic Valpolicella region, ten kilometers from the town of Verona and twenty kilometers from the gentle hills surrounding Lake Garda. The wine is in part stored in steel containers (60%) and in part refined in durmast wood casks of 500-liter- and 750-liter-capacity for 6-7 months. At the end of such period the Valpolicella wine is re-assembled and bottled a month later. Due to the freshness characteristics of this wine it is brought to market after a short time but will age well for 3-4 years.
Vaona is a family farm with ten hectares of vines in Valpolicella. The vineyards stretch over the local hills of alluvial soils at altitudes ranging from 200 to 250 meters above sea level. The Vaona family has a long history of farming and tending these vines, but only recently have they applied the quality to which they have tended vines to vinification and winemaking. Special care is taken in the laborious process of laying out the grapes to wither. The results are hard to argue with. The wines are marked with aromas and flavors of bright fruit, elevated levels of acidity and an overall freshness, direly lacking in the area.
Veneto is one of the most prolific wine regions in Italy. Verona, its capital, has been an important wine center since Roman times. Commercial success hasn't always had beneficial effects on the wines. Since the 1970s perceptions of Veneto's most venerable wines - notably Valpolicella and Soave - have suffered thanks to overproduction and the inferior quality of big producers. Thanks to a new generation of small producers who tend their own vines and make their own juice, Veneto's comeback is picking up momentum. The new wines are refreshing and nuanced, whether red or white. Tastes are changing again and these wines are right for the times - all the more so because they offer unbeatable price/quality.
