The blend is 59% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Ribolla Gialla (an ancient variety brought to California from Friuli, Italy), 14% Semillon, and 7% Tocai Friulano. The Sauvignon Blanc brings a clean fresh citrusy acidity and some tropical character while the Ribolla gialla imparts seashell minerality, nuttiness, and structure to the blend. The Semillon contributes viscosity and a ripe fig character that adds gravity and weight. The Tocai friulano adds spicy aromatic notes. All of this is balanced by a vivid acidity balanced by a rich lees character and backdrop of sweet oak. 896 Cases produced.

Matthiason is a family endeavor, the effort of Steve and Jill Klein Matthiasson. They both had life-long careers in sustainable agriculture, and apply those ideals of balance, restraint, and respect for the individual—and for the whole—to their wine. Their production is simple but careful. This concept is central to the tradition of viticulture and winemaking. Respect for this tradition forms the core of their work. To that end, their hands literally touch every vine and every bottle.

The Napa Valley is one of the most highly praised regions in the wine world, and has been ever since the mid-70's (if not the mid-60's for Robert Mondavi and like-minded pioneers) for the quality of its climate, and its seemingly inexhaustible supply of moderate, ideal growing seasons. A region full of climatologically diverse sub-regions, it is a winemaker's paradise, as they are able to harness the potential of so many diverse terroirs within such a relatively small area.
