One of the oldest, and most exciting winery to come out of Spain is the family estate of Joan d'Anguera. The original vineyards were planted in 1820, one of the pioneers in the newly formed D.O. of Monsant, west of Barcelona. They remark that their grapes are made of the unique soils, the wine from them created by hands and wisdom. The wines capture the essence of the Spanish and Mediterranean climates, with nine hundred year old olive trees and clay with limestone soils. The hard work of past generations sets the standard for the new d'Anguera's, brothers Joan and Josep, who are in the process of having the entire estate certified biodynamic in 2011. Currently their older vines Garnatxa is certified organic, full-bodied with tons of ripe fruit, purity and length. An excellent pairing for any meats of the summer grill.
Officially approved by Madrid as a D.O. in August 2001, this area is no longer known as D.O. Tarragona. With good reason, Montsant is more similar to Priorat. In fact, Montsant is named after a mountain that lies within the Priorat D.O and while similar there are a few differences. Loose red sands and limestone are the predominate vineyard soils instead of the black slate of Priorat. But like it's cousin, Monsant boasts dry reds that are concentrated, deep red, and with high alcohol content.
