The Sartarelli Estate is known for their aromatic and expressive Verdicchio, so this is a real treat. The grapes are picked late in the harvest in October when the sugar is ripest and then left to raisin until December when they are finally pressed into wine. The result is a concentrated yet focused dessert wine that showcases the grape, vineyards and winemaking of Donatella Sartarelli.

Prior to 1972 this estate sold its fruit to other wineries, but when now-owner Donatella Sartarelli started making wines with her father in the 70's, they began bottling their own juice. Located in the village of Poggio San Marcello, the vineyards are planted exclusively to Verdicchio and lie on the steep slopes along west side of the Esino river in the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi appellation. The estate covers 66 hectares. The old-vines (average age, 33 years) grow on calcerous and marl soil, and ripen slowly, allowing a great concentration of depth and terroir. Farming is sustainable, with chemicals used only when absolutely necessary. Multiple passes are done during harvest, to ensure the fruit is picked at optimum ripeness. They craft several cuvees, the Classico being the littlest brother. Most vinification is done in either cement or steel.

Often getting short shrift here in the States, the Marche region on Italy's central-eastern coast produces some of the most drinkable, accessible wines in all of Italy. Be it the delightful Verdicchio grape, or the Rosso Conero & Piceno blends made from Montepulciano & Sangiovese, these wines are made for good food and good times.
