Primitivo is the same grape as zinfandel, brought to California by Italian immigrants. Schola Sarmenti’s primitivo however, has less richness than those of California Zin but some of the same basic fruit elements.
Adherence to and propagation of native oenological practices is the reason behind Schola Sarmenti's founding. They particularly pride themselves on the nurturing of the Alberello della Penisola Salentina, an ancient technique of vine management that Sarmenti keeps safe. The estate believes that every drop of the wine they produce is living matter.
Nardo, on the Ionian Sea, has long been an important agricultural area. The vineyards here have been in use since the Neolithic era, and later, the Basilian monks codified some of the world's first wine standards and practices here in the late 700-800s. Rich soil and easy access to water-travel have continued to make this region a vital part of Italy's agri-business.
