Andrea Occhipinti is an avant-gardist: he is the first in Italy to vinify a dry Aleatico (usually its sweet), and also the first to vinify a white wine from Aleatico (a red grape). His Alter Ego exhibits compelling aromatics, which lead to ripe orchard fruit and mineral flavors. One of the most unique we’ve ever encountered.
While studying at the Agragian University of Tuscia, Andrea Occhipinti fell in love with the vineyards of Gradoli. They, in fact, became the subject of his master thesis in 2004.
Soon after graduating, Andrea was purchased 4 hectares of vineyards planted in the 1990’s. They are situated at 450 meters above sea level (1500 feet) on the volcanic slopes of Lake Bolsena, the biggest volcanic lake in Europe. Located an one hour north of Rome, the lake provides a unique microclimate that together with the particular terroir and Andrea’s objective to preserve and promote the local indigenous varietals, Aleatico and Grechetto Rosso, produce incredibly unique, flavorful wines.
