Grown in the north-eastern part of Italy along the Slovenian border, Jesera actually means "little lake" in Slovenian. Ideal growing conditions on steep slopes and cool winds out of the Alps contribute to this superior fruit. Great acidity is balanced by a lush fullness that makes it a great food wine.
These interesting wines from come from Collio in Friuli, northeast Italy, close to the Slovenian border. Venica & Venica appears to be an estate determinedly aspiring to greatness -- producing wines of undoubted depth and seriousness.
Their vineyards are spread over 7 different hills from 300-400 meters above sea level -- each with it's own distinct micro-climate. This great terroir provides unique characteristics to each of the vines and, when blended together, creates a wine of great complexity.
The Venica family have made wine here since 1930, and the vineyards are between 15 and 30 years old. Around 13,000 bottles of are produced annually, and today brothers Gianni and Georgio Venica are in charge of vineyards and winemaking respectively.
