Meet the CoolVines Wine Geek! He’ll guide you toward – or away from! – wines that have a unique flavor profile: intentionally oxidized wines, earthy, stinky wines, wines with a bit of fritz on the tongue. Look for him throughout our web site, and on the shelves in our stores, to point the way toward these geeky wines.
The traditional straw-wrapped bottles of Chianti are called "fiascos." Ironically, given the misplaced image of Chianti as a lesser wine, these straw bottles became prohibitively expensive to produce and were discontinued. Well this wine is no fiasco!
A blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot, the Vigna Vecchia is fermented in cement tanks with only a portion of it aged in wood barrels. The result is a more modern "fruit-forward" style Chianti. Yet it's not without the traditional Tuscan spiciness, calmed by rich dark fruit. A guaranteed crowd pleaser.
The historical tradition of the Chianti Classico boasts among its most faithful producers the Fattoria Vignavecchia, belonging to the Beccari family, who received it through inheritance from the Minucci family, proprietor since the end of he 17th century.
One of the first areas to classify its borders and become delimited in 1716, Chianti Classico is fixed in minds worldwide as the proto-typical, idyllic Italian wine region. Due to Chianti Classico's relatively high vineyards (800-1600 feet above sea level) and the damp climate, it is a challenge to get the Sangiovese grape to ripen fully in all but the hottest, driest years.
