The Steele Cuvee Chardonnay is the flagship white wine for Steele Vineyards. Grapes are sourced from family owned vines in Lake County, as well as from years of close relationships with small vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley, Carneros, and Mendocino County. This Chardonnay represents what Jed has done for forty years, find the best fruit and hand select lots and barrels which then are blended into his cuvee. The end result is a rich, full-bodied Chardonnay that is representative of the entire State of California.
Jed Steele has been making wines for forty years, starting from humble beginnings as a cellar worker at Stoney Hill, to starting Edmeades in the Anderson Valley, and finally becoming the first winemaker for the Kendall-Jackson brand. Establishing Steele Wines in 1991, Jed started by sourcing grapes from all across California to produce the cuvees his name is associated with. His lifelong work reflects his never ending fascination with many different varietals and vineyard locations, which allows him to maintain the practice of true craftmanship in the production of his small lot bottlings.
Lake County surrounds Clear Lake, the largest natural lake in California. The vineyards are planted throughout the county, from the agriculturally rich valley at 1,370 feet elevation (lake level), to the rocky red volcanic soil at more than 2,000 feet elevation around Mt. Konocti—a dormant volcano in the Pacific Rim chain. These elevations provide cooler winter conditions and a later start to the growing season. Summer growing conditions are suitably warm to ripen the grapes and the elevation allows rapid cooling in the evening. Few grape pests can tolerate the altitude and cool climate. Lake County growers are committed to sustainable farming and participate in year long educational programs to this end.
