The funky tin label might strike the first chord, but the essence of how winemaker Noe Reinares Fernandez thinks of Rioja, is what's inside the bottle. The vineyards are planted near the town of Alcanadre, and the estate sits on the Ebro River which creates a perfect microclimate within the arid region of Rioja. Using only organic materials and hand selecting grapes for their coupage, the BVN team creates an everyday fun blend that is expressive of the region. 50% Tempranillo and 50% Garnacha are blended and aged in French oak for only four months, giving the wine balance but preserving the natural varietal characteristics. Modern and fruit forward, there is still a sense that this wine belongs to Rioja.
BVN stands for Bodegas y Vinedos Noe, and is the new kid on the Rioja block, with production starting in 2005. Noe Reinares Fernandez, viticulturist and wine producer runs the estate, and through the combination of old vines, organic fertilizers, the best selection of the healthiest and ripest fruits, produces wines that are true expressions of the Rioja region of Spain.
The Rioja DOC sits astride the Ebro river, as it winds its way from its source in the Sierra de Cantabria range, to the Mediterranean at it's mouth just below Barcelona. Divided into three subzones, wines of Rioja often depend largely on which part of the region the vines are grown.
To the northwest lies Rioja Alta, where Tempranillo and Garnacha vines grow on the higher elevations of the foothills of the Cantabrias. Next to it is the Basque region of Rioja Alavesa, where the Alava province juts into the Ebro Valley. To the southeast is the hotter, Mediterranean-influenced Rioja Baja, where more of the native Graciano is blended into the area's reds.
Rioja's wines have historically been simple reds, blended and aged in American oak. An influx of French winemaking practices led to more refined efforts at estate-bottling and more judicious use of oak, and more French oak at that. Nowadays the region is struggling to find a cohesive identity, producing excellent wines of both new and old world character.
