Van Volxem focuses on a dry style of Riesling, shying away from botrytis and never allowing the alcohol to exceed 12.5%. Farming is done with minimal influence and 40% of it is high-density, organically farmed many of the old vines being between 50-125 years old. At Van Volxem, they are harvesting from the some of most historically important sites in the Saar— Gottessfuss, Wiltinger Braunfels, and Sharzhoffberger. Goldberg is Van Volxem’s newest vineyard and has historic importance in the region. It is a blend of very old vines and some new plantings, a charming dry style made from 100% riesling grapes.

Roman Niewodniscanski’s Van Volxem estate is controversial. Not too far back, he purchased this estate, located on the site of a Jesuit monastery in the centre of Wiltingen (Saar) with the view to restoring it to make the sorts of wines it would have made when German Rieslings fetched higher prices than Bordeaux. He went back to the 19th century and consulted maps drawn up for tax reasons, which showed the best vineyards, many of which had been lost sight of in the 20th century.

He’s given up on the Pradikat system, and instead makes wines that he reckons express their vineyard sites best. These are a bit different than the classic Mosel-Saar-Ruwer style.

The Mosel River valley snakes its way through southern Germany, on its way south to France and Luxembourg. Famously steep inclines lead to difficult work and simply astounding wines. Slate soil dominates the area, with outcroppings of harder quartz farther north.
