Sourced largely from the oldest home blocks now reaching 29 years of age, the Abel clone is the predominant type of Pinot Noir used in this wine. Bright fruit, supple tannins and a long elegant finish are the highlights of this Pinot as 2008 was a very favorable vintage in Martinborough, with moderate yields and ideal temperatures and weather conditions throughout the season.
In 1980, Ata Rangi founder Clive Paton traded his livelihood - a herd of dairy cows - for a stony, barren 5 hectare Martinborough paddock. The first vines planted included the now legendary 'gumboot' clone of pinot. Thirty years later, Robert Parker's website reports "When I asked winemakers to name New Zealand's greatest producers, one name kept coming up: Ata Rangi, meaning 'new beginning". Parker's Wine Guide also rates Ata Rangi as one of the top five wineries in New Zealand.
More recently, in a blind tasting of a half-dozen Pinot Noirs from around the world Jancis Robinson preferred Ata Rangi to Domaine Romanée-Conti. There can be little better testament to the quality of Ata Rangi's Pinot Noir!!
Despite its success, Ata Rangi remains proudly a family owned and managed estate. Talented winemaker Helen Masters today crafts the range of exceptional wines, allowing Clive more time to focus his extensive tree planting and conservation work at the Ata Rangi Bush Block, 20 km to the south. The company is fully committed to organic principles, with both winery and vineyard ISO accredited. Ata Rangi is also a founding member of Sustainable Winegrowers of NZ.
