Roland Alazard and his sons are the 7th generation to tend the vines on this tiny estate just outside the town of Vacqueyras in the southern Rhone Valley. The Alazard family is known for their excellent Rhone cru wines Beaumes de Venise, Gigondas and Vacqueyras, which they make carefully according to French AOC rules.

Roland, however, has a it of a geeky side- kind of mad wine scientist, if you will. He likes to experiment with different grape varieties to make wines that are fun and appeal to those seeking the non-traditional. To this end, he makes a de-classified Cotes du Rhone Village that is a light, fruity, easy drinking wine at a price that is 25% less than AOC Cotes du Rhone Villages.

AOC rules strictly state that Grenache and Syrah must be used (at least 50%). Other permitted grapes include Cinsault, Carignan and Mourvedre. M. Alazard instead employs 10% Merlot along with the 50% Grenache and 40% Syrah. His no-no is the wine geek’s delight.

This easy drinking wine is made with grapes that are hand-picked from 35 year old vines. The fermentation process and bottling is the same as Gigondas.

Located in the south of France, on the foot of Mont Dentelles de Montmirail in the village Vacqueyras, the estate Colline Saint Jean has belonged to the Alazard’s Family for generations. Roland Alazard and his son Cyril continue to preserve their time-honored methods for wine-making, and the grapes continue to be hand picked, carefully hand sorted, with an utmost respect to nature and the environment, just as their ancestors once did.

While famous wine regions like Chateauneuf du Pape, Vacqueyras and Gigondas are fun to say, almost 75% of wine production in the Southern Rhone is labeled Cotes du Rhone, an expansive sets of vineyards to the south. Extremely reasonable in price, the region is best known for smaller producers making sensational wines. Different from their Nothern Rhone cousins of Hermitage and Cote Rotie, the vineyards in Cotes du Rhone are part of the sunny, herb scented, lavender strewn, olive growing Mediterranean. Brutally hot days are contrasted with the cold mistral winds blowing from the Alps down the Rhone Valley. These winds concentrate the sugar and acid in the grapes while cooling down the vines and protecting against humidity and mold. The end results are generally full bodied wines full of power and finesse.
