An aged albarino? Yes! It works. This 7 year old wine has a rich texture and a slightly sherry-like flavor that comes from the aging of the wine. Handpicked from 18 year old vines grown on high, rocky hillsides in Spain, the wine is named for a legendary Celtic Fortress overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Known for its tingling acidity and silky texture, this wine would be perfect with seafood.
Unlike traditional wineries, Oriel doesn't own any vineyards. Instead, they find top winemakers in some of the best wine regions of the world and have them make wines from the best grapes they can find. Giving the wines their stamp of approval, Oriel then bottles the wines under their own label.
North of Portugal, on Spain's eastern seaboard, sits the Galician Coast. Heavily influenced by the Atlantic Ocean's weather pattern, the wine producing region here (known as Rias Baixas) tends to farm using trellises that allow for maximum airflow to keep the fruit well ventilated (preventing fungus and rot.) The main grape here is the Albarino, a thick-skinned grape resistant to mildew, and making for some lively, fresh wines of character.
