While making the 2006 "Gardens of Babylon", producer Abe Schoener found 4 barrels that were distinctly different from the others. Setting them aside, he let them age further; the result being this gorgeous wine with an old world "Barolo-esque" flavor--featuring aromas of shoe leather and dried rose petals. Though the wine boasts massive tannins, they are softened and well integrated into this powerful wine.

AS with many small, utilitarian wineries in California, barrels and tanks practically spill out of Tenbrink, home of Scholium Project, here in the Suisun Valley, just east of Napa Valley. Yet to call Scholium Project a winery and its proprietor, Abe Schoener, a winemaker is a little like calling Salvador Dal� a painter. It�s true, but it does not begin to capture his visionary character. No winery in California is more unconventional, experimental or even radical than Scholium. Half the wines it makes in any given year are exquisite. The other half are shocking. All of them are fascinating, which is exactly the way Mr. Schoener wants it.

California's Suisun Valley, nestled between two mountain ranges just northeast of San Francisco (just east of the town of Napa) was granted AVA status in 1982. In early American vitcultural history, Suisun enjoyed a more prominent reputation than today, standing with its neighbor Green Valley as an important contributor to California's wine industry. The climate is Mediterranean in nature, and subsequently the fruit in the valley ripens evenly and moderately in the best of seasons. Suisun has approximately 3000 acres under vine.
