Meet the CoolVines Wine Geek! He’ll guide you toward – or away from! – wines that have a unique flavor profile: intentionally oxidized wines, earthy, stinky wines, wines with a bit of fritz on the tongue. Look for him throughout our web site, and on the shelves in our stores, to point the way toward these geeky wines.
While Palmina wines are definitely based on Italian varieties of grapes, the intended expression of the wines is more focused on the approach and mind set toward wine in Italian culture rather than winemaking technicalities. Each has a thread of where it was grown and little California lifestyle and attitude to round out each wine's personality.
Formed by winemaker Steve Clifton in 1995, Palmina is more than a winery and enoteca it's a philosophy and a passion that wine is an extension of the plate, a component of a meal and a means to bring people together. Palmina produces a full range of wines crafted from Italian varietals grown in Santa Barbara County, California. They are not trying to emulate the Italian versions of those grapes, but rather interpret the styles to the growing conditions and vineyard sites of the very unique characteristics of Santa Barbara County. As Steve says, "the wines are Italian by tradition and modern by design." We happen to agree!
Nearly three-quarters the size of France, California accounts for almost 90 percent of entire American wine production. The production in California alone is one third larger than that of Australia. If California were a separate country, it would be the world's fourth-largest wine producer.
The state's viticultural history dates back to the 18th century when Spanish missionaries planted the first vineyards to produce wine. Today there are more than 1,200 wineries in the state, ranging from small boutique wineries to large corporations with distribution across the globe.
