The Abraxas is a salute to distinctiveness and all about bringing the vines to the table. Rob Sinskey says "I eat, therefore I drink. Food fuels the desire for wine. A wine must fit the table just as the grapes must fit the place." Born of the idea that four classic grapes of Alsace (Pinot Gris, Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Blanc), planted in the Sinskey organic and biodynamic Scintilla Sonoma Vineyard, would respond distinctly to the unique weather patterns of each year. Then, the four varieties could be blended, in ratios determined by each variety’s unique response to the vintage, making the wine whole while avoiding the manipulations often found in a more industrialized cellar. The wines commanding texture and bright, refresh the palate and make the wine an amenable dinner companion.

Rob Sinskey believes the goals of making luxuriously elegant wines and farming with earth friendly methods are not mutually exclusive. Rather, he has found that caring for the land organically, combined with conscientious business practices (practices that include a solar powered winery, using biodiesel from used restaurant oil in tractors and trucks, having sheep and chickens mow the cover crops) have helped define the well-crafted wines of RSV. After 20 years, his philosophy that "Wine is not an athletic event" still holds true to this day. The goal has always been to make "pure wines of character that pair well with cuisine." RSV is spreading the gospel that fine wines made from organically grown grapes are the ultimate luxury. RSV's holdings have grown to over 200 acres of CCOF certified organic and Demeter certified Biodynamic vineyards in five Carneros locations (Three Amigos, Vandal, OSR and Capa in Napa Carneros and the Scintilla Vineyard in Sonoma Carneros) with a small estate vineyard behind the winery in the Stags Leap District.

The Napa Valley is one of the most highly praised regions in the wine world, and has been ever since the mid-70's (if not the mid-60's for Robert Mondavi and like-minded pioneers) for the quality of its climate, and its seemingly inexhaustible supply of moderate, ideal growing seasons. A region full of climatologically diverse sub-regions, it is a winemaker's paradise, as they are able to harness the potential of so many diverse terroirs within such a relatively small area.
