Meet the CoolVines Wine Geek! He’ll guide you toward – or away from! – wines that have a unique flavor profile: intentionally oxidized wines, earthy, stinky wines, wines with a bit of fritz on the tongue. Look for him throughout our web site, and on the shelves in our stores, to point the way toward these geeky wines.
This ancient grape represents the long tradition of winemaking in Central Italy. It has a straw yellow color with gold sparkles, while on the nose has an elegant, flowery bouquet and the palate expresses a variety of fruits.
Saio winery is a family-owned estate by Alfio Mencarelli and his two daughters Agnese and Irene. The estate is right at the feet of the Basilica San Francesco of Assisi, it was also named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We found ourselves intrigued, in an area full of history, at the intersection between religion, poetry and legend. The name of the winery Saio has a reference to simplicity. Saio is the simple cloth worn by the monks of San Francesco. This signifies the idea of minimalism and simplicity. It means an attention to substance, rather than form.
Umbria is a small, beautiful region in the center of Italy, rich in history and art, with a landscape of medieval hilltop villages, castles and monasteries. Unlike its Tuscan neighbor to the north, and despite its scenic beauty and cultural treasures, Umbria is a region largely untouched by large-scale tourism.
