The Veyder Gruner is an Austrian wine to behold, a fine, extremely elegant wine with a healthy dose of minerality and plenty of finesse. Kreutles is the name of the vineyards with deep soils at the foot of the Loibenberg. They deliver well structured, very drinkable Grüner Veltliner and is the classic Wachau wine.
Unlike practically any other wine region, the Wachau is distinguished by its terraced vineyards with extremely old, dry stone walls. Not only do they represent the optical allure that the Wachau is so famous for, but they also are markedly responsible for the unique character of the Wachau´s wines. Manual care of the terraces is highly intensive (requiring 5 -10 times more work than in vineyards which can accommodate vehicles). And this is why many of the old terraces are in danger of being abandoned, something that would ultimately change the landscape of the Wachauin the future. So Peter made it his goal to acquire exposed terraces with mainly old vines and protect them from being cleared. Although this means pure handwork, no machines whatsoever, Peter is convinced that the qualities of the wines are so unique, so full of character and spectacular, that this work will be repaid many times over. Most of the vines are between 30 and 50 years old. Drinkability and age-worthiness are key to all work-related decisions.
One of the oldest wine producing regions in the world, Austria has been cultivating grapes and creating wine since the fourth century BC. After a brief stint in the Roman Empire, the vineyards were painstakingly cultivated by monks throughout the Middle Ages, similar to those of France and Germany. Of all the wine regions in Austria, the Niederosterreich (Lower Austria) is both the largest and most important. Travel down the Danube River and you'll come to the district of Wachau, the tiniest and best. Terraced vineyards climb up the banks of the river, with granite and slate soils contributing to the fantastic minerality. The cool climates combined with the soils produce white wines of clarity, elegance, structure and acidity making them wonderful food friendly wines.
