Lattanzio Wines sources their Pinot Noir fruit from the W.E. Bottoms Vineyard. This very small, 3 acre vineyard is located near the quaint town of Occidental in the coolest part of the appellation. The ocean breezes and persistent marine layer keep the area cool and the vines happy. Classic Sonoma Pinot Noir.
Great wine is made in the vineyard. This is the core belief at Lattanzio, it guides them in the day to day crafting of their wines. They strive to showcase the source vineyard, not the winemaking skills of owner and winemaker Justin Lattanzio. His story is quite interesting as Justin moved to San Francisco from the East Coast in the Fall of 1996, knowing very little about wine. However, with all of the great restaurants and wine shops in the San Francisco Bay area, it was easy for him to find and to taste some of the finest wines from California and around the world. It wasn't long before Justin became enamored with wine. He proceeded to spend much of his free time tasting wine as well as reading about it.
In 2003, after several years working in the environmental consulting and biotechnology fields, Justin decided to move up to Sonoma County to pursue a career in winemaking. He worked for two years in the cellars at Copain Wines and Copain Custom Crush. There, he managed the crushpad and assisted such highly regarded wineries as Pisoni Vineyards, Carlisle Winery and DuMol with their wine work. It was at Copain where Justin developed his passion for Pinot Noir and Syrah made in a more traditional, old world style.
In May of 2005, when the opportunity arose to work with world renowned winemaker Heidi Barrett (of La Sirena, Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle fame) at the new Revana Family Vineyard in Napa Valley, Justin didn't hesitate. At Revana, Justin was able to fine tune his winemaking skills working with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from some of the best vineyards in Napa Valley.
Mid-Northern Sonoma's proximity to the coast, as well as the dense fogs that creep down hillsides, is the key to the region's favorable viticultural tendencies. Long a source for excellent Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the area in and surrounding the Russian River Valley benefit with long, ideal growing seasons, allowing the perfect balance in ripening the fruit.
