Refreshing in more ways than one. La Madone is made from 100% gamay, and red grapes don’t come more refreshing. Secondly it is from the Loire Valley, not the grape’s indigenous, Beaujolais. This is fun stuff, brimming with bright, fruit and spice. A wonderful pairing for roast chicken or pork.

The domaine was founded in 1997 with the discovery of some abandoned vines in the mostly volcanic soils of the Côte du Forez which today encompasses a little over six hectares. In 2001, four hectares of vines were planted and Gilles left his career to concentrate on his wines. It was in this year that a conversion to organic agriculture was made. A couple years later Gilles stretched to apply some principles of bio-dynamic farming (green fertilizers, plant brew) which he continues today.

Cotes du Forez is the appellation for red and rose wines from 17 communes in the western Rhone-Alpes administrative region of France. The wines are light in body, low in tannin and very much reliant on their fresh, vibrant fruit flavors. They bear all the hallmarks of classic Gamay vinified through carbonic maceration and are best consumed within a few years of vintage. The Cotes du Forez appellation was first created as a VDQS in 1953 and was promoted to full AOC status in February 2000. It includes around 200 acres (120ha) of vines (all Gamay), which produce just under 4500hL of wine each year. One in five bottles is rose, with the remaining proportion taken up entirely by red wines.
