Meet the CoolVines Wine Geek! He’ll guide you toward – or away from! – wines that have a unique flavor profile: intentionally oxidized wines, earthy, stinky wines, wines with a bit of fritz on the tongue. Look for him throughout our web site, and on the shelves in our stores, to point the way toward these geeky wines.
This wine is sourced from a new vineyard Jean Louis bought called ‘Les Clos’. It is 100% Roussanne from vines that range from five to sixty-years-old, though most of them are quite old. The soil is granite, which is part of a deposit the river left when it retreated hundreds of years ago. This wine was left in barrel by the previous owners of the vineyard (a family of homeopathic doctors only treated the vines with purely natural matter). Jean Louis found it in barrels so old that they were sealed with crystallized tartrates. The effect was like fermenting in glass, and produced a wine with stunning precision. 200 cases made.
Chave owns vines in 9 of the 18 vineyards that cover the Hermitage hillside. Keenly aware of the different dynamics fruit from different parcels can have, Jean-Louis pays close attention to the terroir-influences when selecting fruit for this, his top cuvee. He uses little to no oak on his wines, believing that the innate character of the fruit is what makes a truly great wine. In this vein, he intervenes with filtering or fining minimally, if at all.
Saint-Joseph or St.-Joseph is a French wine Appellation d'Origine Controlle(AOC) in the northern Rhone wine region of France. Though the appellation covers the largest amount of land, it is second in actual size under vine to Crozes-Hermitage, an appellation with which it shares much regarding style and prestige. While St.-Joseph is primarily a red wine region based on the Syrah grape, there may be up to 10% of white (Roussanne or Marsanne) grapes in the blend.
