Boucherottes is located near the Pommard border but surprisingly produces a fruity style of wine without hard tannins. The earth here is supple, very fine and quite red in color. The yield from the old vines here is very small. The regularity of this cru is quite remarkable.

The Gros Family have been making wine in Burgundy since the 1830’s. In 1988, Anne-Francoise inherited some very prestigious parcels of vineyard in the Cotes de Nuits from her father, Jean. Combined with the legacy holdings of her husband and winemaker Francois Parent, the Domaine now sports a number a number of prestigious labels from both the Nuits and Beaune. For a number of years, the Gros name has been at the forefront of the venerable domaines of Burgundy.

Francois himself represents the 13th generation to work the vines of his family’s land in and around Pommard. Their roots in Burgundy trace back to 1630 and he is linked to ancestor Etienne Parent, a highly-respected vigneron and negociant who toured Burgundy with Thomas Jefferson in the 1780’s while Jefferson was Ambassador to France. Jefferson was a Burgundy aficionado, enjoying Pommard and Volnay in substantial quantities. His personal buying continued after his election as President and evidence suggests that Parent provided Jefferson with vine cuttings for his vineyards in Monticello.

Today, Francois is renowned for highly extracted wines of elegance and distinction, which are the perfect expression of Pinot Noir. Leaning toward a biodynamic approach, his traditional methods of cultivating the land and tending the vines are intimately adapted to the different microclimates, soils and expositions of the vineyards. The results are wines that each bare the hallmark of their specific “terroir”, identity and personality.

The great wines of Burgundy are uniquely complex, compelling and at times memorizing. Above all they are evocative, transformative but like all creatures, temperamental and anything but dependable. Two grapes dominate this agricultural masterpiece, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Both grapes achieve their greatest elegance when planted in cooler climates, to which Burgundy is the coolest and most Northern climate of all the major regions famous for red wines. When winemakers talk about Burgundy, they generally speak of terroir, the compilation of the vineyard's soil, slope, orientation, nuance of climate, etc. This concept of terroir is what makes wines produced from grapes even in the same village or vineyard strikingly different. Burgundy is a place of legend, awe and adventure, a place that wine lovers call home.
