Organic practices and world class vineyard sites in St. Aubin in the Cote de Beaune of Burgundy, make the Domaine Saint Francois Bourgogne Blanc an affordable luxury for any night of the week. Their Chardonnay is crafted from 35-year old vines, using methods to preserve that only the best juices go into the wine. Only 500 cases produced, with only 100 imported to the U.S.
Born into a family of winemakers dating back to 1679, Rene Lequin-Colin and his son, Francois, farm a nine hectare family estate, representing some of the most prized land in the Cote de Beaune. On this hallowed ground, where Chardonnay is king, Rene proudly produces the venerable Grand Cru wines of Batard-Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne, as well as lesser vineyards that reflect the same quality and craftsmanship.
While adhering to the traditional methods of hand-picking grapes, green harvesting and light plowing, Rene & Francois balance their respect for nature with modern technology by utilizing contemporary methods in the winery. With ultimate respect for their ancestral soils, Domaine Saint Francois has been organic for a number of years and will receive the coveted ECOCERT certification in 2011.
The great wines of Burgundy are uniquely complex, compelling and at times memorizing. Above all they are evocative, transformative but like all creatures, temperamental and anything but dependable. Two grapes dominate this agricultural masterpiece, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Both grapes achieve their greatest elegance when planted in cooler climates, to which Burgundy is the coolest and most Northern climate of all the major regions famous for red wines. When winemakers talk about Burgundy, they generally speak of terroir, the compilation of the vineyard's soil, slope, orientation, nuance of climate, etc. This concept of terroir is what makes wines produced from grapes even in the same village or vineyard strikingly different. Burgundy is a place of legend, awe and adventure, a place that wine lovers call home.
