The grapes for this Pinot Noir were sourced from vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA of Monterey County, where high winds, dry days, and bay fogs create a cool, but very long, growing season. These growing conditions are ideal for cool-climate grapes such as Pinot Noir, and lead to full, forward fruit flavors and ideal acidity. Grapes were harvested at an ideal balance of sugar and acid, and the wine was fermented in small open-top tanks. The wine completed malo-lactic fermentation in French oak barrels (20% new), where it aged for 6 months prior to bottling. Fruit forward and bright with hints of leather and cedar, Mandolin serves as a perfect accompaniment to salmon, roasted pork or lamb.
Mandolin is a collaboration of winemaker Phillip Zorn and California mainstay Brent Shortridge. By combining Zorn's European background with Shortridge's extensive Central Coast and Monterey connections, they craft excellent wines with character to spare. The aim is to produce a beverage that can compare to a mandolin's "brilliant tone and great carrying power."
The Monterey AVA sits on a southeast diagonal, running parallel to the coast south of the epononymous city. Devilish to farm, due to the sweeping cool currents of air rushing in from Monterey Bay and the Pacific, this valley (the Salinas River Valley) has seen some of the most massive agriculture projects ever attempted on California soil, including at one time having more vines planted than all of Napa. Much of the juice is sold in bulk to large Central Coast producers, but some of the best vineyard plots are producing noteworthy wines of their own.

I love pinots from the Monterey area. The cool climate makes for a more balanced wine than the sunnier climes of Napa, IMHO. this one is a bargain at $16.
