Family owned and operated since 1887, the Martin Family first began their flagship Albarino under their name in 2002. Estate harvested from their El Pazo and Castrelo vineyards, the result is a elegant cuvee, with excellent structure, complexity and length.
The history of the Bodega can be traced back as far as 1887 where old documents prove the existence of a wine cellar and the sale of Albariño. Domingo Martin-Morales constructed the current cellar in 1982, some five years before the D.O. of Rías Baixas was actually created. The winery was the very first in the region to be equipped with stainless steel tanks for wine storage, which at that time appeared to many as something of an unnecessary extravagance - this has of course, since become the norm in modern winemaking.
Domingo also had the foresight to construct the bodega over three different levels - the top level being the grape reception for harvest, the middle level is the pressing room, and the lower level our tank storage. Owing to this thoughtful construction we are able to minimize pumping, thereby handling grapes, must and finished wine with the utmost possible care.
North of Portugal, on Spain's eastern seaboard, sits the Galician Coast. Heavily influenced by the Atlantic Ocean's weather pattern, the wine producing region here (known as Rias Baixas) tends to farm using trellises that allow for maximum airflow to keep the fruit well ventilated (preventing fungus and rot.) The main grape here is the Albarino, a thick-skinned grape resistant to mildew, and making for some lively, fresh wines of character.
