In 2005, a small group of investors purchased the excellent group of Beaune parcels collected by vigneron Roger Duchet in the 1950's and 60's. These mostly 1er Cru plots are overseen by David Croix, the brilliant young winemaker for Camille Giroud. David first became attracted to the property while seeking sources of quality fruit for Giroud, but lack of interest on their part led him to find other partners for the project. David now splits his time between these great Beaune houses.
The estate's moniker is a double entendre, referring to both David's name as well as the cross statue that sits in their Corton-Charlemagne holdings.
Back in 2004 David Croix, (still also) of Maison Camille Giroud noted that the Domaine Duchet with five hectares of well-sited vineyards, centred on Beaune was on the market – he mentioned it to the shareholders of Camille Giroud with the idea of buying Duchet to secure quality of fruit for Giroud, but at that time it didn’t fit the shareholder’s plans so the idea was rejected.
Only a few days later David was joining one of the annual ‘Bouilland Symposia’ – a week of top domaine visits and dinners organised by Becky Wasserman and hosted by Clive Coates; the subject of vineyards was amongst the Friday lunchtime discussion points. By the afternoon one of the the attendees was already considering making a bid with 2 friends, by Saturday a successful offer was made!
The great wines of Burgundy are uniquely complex, compelling and at times memorizing. Above all they are evocative, transformative but like all creatures, temperamental and anything but dependable. Two grapes dominate this agricultural masterpiece, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Both grapes achieve their greatest elegance when planted in cooler climates, to which Burgundy is the coolest and most Northern climate of all the major regions famous for red wines. When winemakers talk about Burgundy, they generally speak of terroir, the compilation of the vineyard's soil, slope, orientation, nuance of climate, etc. This concept of terroir is what makes wines produced from grapes even in the same village or vineyard strikingly different. Burgundy is a place of legend, awe and adventure, a place that wine lovers call home.
