Leroux's 2009 Savigny is a vibrant, exciting incarnation of pinot noir. Benjamin is known for his sensitivity to the sites in which his grapes are grown, and his winemaking skill really comes through on this perfumed, balanced, and silky pinot.
Benjamin Leroux is perhaps the most gifted young winemaker in Burgundy. As a child, he began developing his palate by tasting and spitting wines that family friends would bring to his parents' home. At the age of 13, he enrolled in Beaune’s Lycée Viticole in order to further hone his palate and learn the fundamentals of viticulture and winemaking. After rounding out his wine education in Bordeaux and New Zealand, he returned to Burgundy in 1999 to lead the winemaking at Domaine des Epeneaux.
Ben's specialty is working with small, lesser-known vineyards in the Cote de Beaune. He stresses the nuances of each of the sites, attempting to highlight those elements in the wines themselves.
The great wines of Burgundy are uniquely complex, compelling and at times memorizing. Above all they are evocative, transformative but like all creatures, temperamental and anything but dependable. Two grapes dominate this agricultural masterpiece, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Both grapes achieve their greatest elegance when planted in cooler climates, to which Burgundy is the coolest and most Northern climate of all the major regions famous for red wines. When winemakers talk about Burgundy, they generally speak of terroir, the compilation of the vineyard's soil, slope, orientation, nuance of climate, etc. This concept of terroir is what makes wines produced from grapes even in the same village or vineyard strikingly different. Burgundy is a place of legend, awe and adventure, a place that wine lovers call home.
