The Heartland Viognier-Pinot Gris is sourced from mature vineyards in the Langhorne Creek and Limestone Coast areas of Southern Australia. Some of the oldest wine regions, steeped in tradition and history, the grapes benefit from a phenomenon known as the “Lake Doctor.” In the growing season every afternoon a cooling ocean breeze comes through the area across the lake reducing daytime temperatures. The moderate overall temperature (well for Australia at least) and low rainfall ensure that the fruit ripens very slowly. The end result is an idealized medium-bodied wine with a great richness, purity of fruit, vibrancy, and balanced structure.
Heartland is a project of rockstar Winemaker Ben Glaetzer, part of the well-known and extremely respected Glaetzer family in the Barossa Valley . His father is winemaker Colin Glaetzer, and his two brothers are also winemakers. Ben, a Roseworthy graduate, grew up within the wine industry and started his career working as a cellarhand at Barossa Valley Estate and then as Winemaker at Tyrrell's. He has travelled and worked extensively throughout the world's wine regions and is now based in the Barossa Valley where he makes the Glaetzer family wines with his father, Colin.. Ben's ability to implement traditional winemaking techniques with a modern flair is reflected in such wines as Heartland Viognier Pinot Gris.
Langhorne Creek was settled in the early 1850s and is one of Australia's oldest wine regions steeped in tradition and history. It is 70km South East of Adelaide on the Fleurieu Peninsula near Lake Alexandrina. It is also famous for a climatic phenomenon called the 'Lake Doctor'. In the growing season every afternoon a cooling ocean breeze comes through the area across the lake reducing daytime temperatures. The region also enjoys a unique global position, comprising of largely flat plains sheltered beyond the Mt Lofty Ranges. With low winter-dominant rainfall and moderate daytime temperatures Langhorne Creek is recognized as a cool climate viticultural area. The region produces wine with richness and purity with fine tannins and opulent mouthfeel along with concentration of color and flavor.
