These grapes are harvested in several steps starting in mid August until the end of September. Then they are selectively hand-picked into small boxes, with gentle pressing after a short period of maceration and fermentation in stainless steel. Situated one hour south east of Vienna, Weingut Günter Triebaumer is located in the wine region of Neusiedlersee-Hügelland. The special microclimate of this district is characterized by Austria’s longest hours of sunlight, high humidity and moderate temperatures influenced by the large, shallow lake, the Neusiedlersee, which is Western Europe’s largest lake. The winery is located in the village of Rust, which is a medieval wine village that lays claim to making the world’s first botrytis wine in the early 16th century. Because of the shallowness of lake Neusieldersee, the vineyards along the shore have botrytis almost every year. The Triebaumer estate has been making wine since 1691.
One of the oldest wine producing regions in the world, Austria has been cultivating grapes and creating wine since the fourth century BC. After a brief stint in the Roman Empire, the vineyards were painstakingly cultivated by monks throughout the Middle Ages, similar to those of France and Germany.
