The Trappolini Cenereto (Chen-eh-reto) is equal parts Montepulciano and Sangiovese. While the thoughts of Italian wine sway towards Sangiovese, the grape is atypical of Latium, but winemaker Roberto Trappolini believes the Orvieto soil is capable of expressing proper characteristics according to the territory in which it is being cultivated. The vineyards create a wine on the lighter side, not extremely concentrated, but vibrant and fun with excellent fruit character and a touch of rustic Italian tannins. This is a great everyday red perfect for pizza and red sauce pasta dishes.

In Latium, or Lazio the region of Rome, a few kilometers far from the Umbrian border Roberto Trappolini makes great wines that respect the tradition and style of the area. So much of Italy has gone over to the international varietals but not here in the "heartland" of Italy. Without second thoughts of any kind Trappolini utilizes primarily the regions local grapes. The winery was established in the 1960's by his grandfather and then run by the father originally producing wine in mass to be sold in bulk the winery has shifted its entire focus to only the production of high quality bottling. While predominately focusing on white wines, as the tradition in Umbria, the line of Trappolini reds are equally spectacular.

The medieval town of Orvieto has been the epicenter of the Umbrian wine trade since the remote time of the Etruscans, who noticed the soils were ideal for grape growing. Wines from this Italian DOC are served for popes, and the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio defined it as "the sun of Italy in a bottle" because of its fragrance, strength and color. Best known for white wines of character and elegance, the local red wines are expressive and fun.
