Brewer-Clifton focuses their efforts solely on the production of vineyard designated Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from several carefully selected, extreme vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation of California. The area's long growing seasons and diversity of marine-based soils combine to produce dynamic and explosive wines with great purity and precision. Each vineyard site is nurtured identically, allowing the pedigree of place to play the most significant role in their portfolio of wines. Courtney's Vineyard, is one of the most windswept in the area, planted entirely to the Mount Eden selection on a very elevated mesa in sandy, clay-loam soils overlooking the appellation. Very generous and opulent with persistent mouthfeel.
Born of an obsession with Santa Barbara County terroir, Greg Brewer and Steve Clifton have set out to put the best vineyard sites of the AVA into a bottle. Brewer-Clifton focus solely on site expressive wines from the Sta. Rita Hills appellation using Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as voices of place. The area's long growing seasons and diversity of marine-based soils combine to produce dynamic and explosive wines with great purity and precision. Each vineyard site is nurtured identically, allowing the pedigree of place to play the most significant role in their wines. Brewer-Clifton wines are only available in small quantities, with total production averages between 7,000 and 8,000 cases annually.
The Santa Rita Hills AVA lies inland along the Santa Ynez River, roughly 10 miles from the Pacific Coast. The river bends south suddenly, marking the end of heavy ocean influence, and the beginning of the region itself. Here the cool climate and variety of silt and clay soils lend themselves to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fruit of high quality, although many winegrowers are experimenting to great results with other cool-weather varieties.
